“What is man that You are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4). As a young shepherd boy on the hill sides of Judea, David had time to meditate on the greatness of God. Looking into the vast universe and the glory of God, he could only exclaim, “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth…”
(Psalm 8:1). As he reflected on God’s greatness, he wrote, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen—even the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas. O’Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!”(Psalm8:3-9).
“What is man that You are mindful of him?” Have you ever considered this questions? It is amazing to me the great love that God has for man! As we consider Him and the beauty of the universe, like David, we should be in awe of His greatness and His unbounded love for mankind. The world is still trying to find out where man came from. But those of us who are, children of God, created in His image, can clearly see in His word why He created man and understand His plans and purposes. David explained it in verses five through eight as he answered his own question. Man has a unique relationship to God. God made man to be the expression of His life, by which the invisible God would be made visible to His creation. Man is the nearest creation to God, an instrument by which God can do His work in the earth. Man is so unique that God Himself dwells in him by His Spirit.
God loves mankind—even lost man. He sees every man and woman made in His own image. Some have just not received Him yet and allowed the light of the gospel to reveal His glory to them. That is why you and I, as children of God, must carry the good news of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, “That the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus” (Philemon 1:6). The greatest evangelistic tool you have is your lifestyle. What messages are you sending to the world that you live in, your workplace, your family, friends and neighborhood, to your children? “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:3-4).
As the Lord asked Adam, “Where are you?” I am asking you, “Where are you? Where are you in your relationship with God? Have you accepted His Son, Jesus Christ?” This is where life begins. Without Him you are hopeless and helpless. There is no security in your life. There never will be without Him. As a child of God, you can be secure. You can walk through each and every trial of life knowing that He is with you. He will never leave you or forsake you. Take time, reflect on the goodness of God and the great vastness of His universe.
